FORTH GENERATION

This unidentified photo appears to be the family of Edward and Sarah with their sons, Billy and Charlie.  The youth is probably Uncle Willie

Edward H. ALVIS was born on 17 Sep 1840 in Argyle, Lee, Iowa.

Edward was never robust after the Civil War. His mother would always call, "Edward, come get your lump of sugar," when she was cooking with brown sugar, because Edward enjoyed the sugar as a candy.

He died on 30 Dec 1914 in Argyle, Lee, Iowa. He was buried in Vincennes, Lee, Iowa. Oakland Cemetery, Vincennes, Des Moines Township, Section 19, Lee County, Iowa, south of Argyle on Iowa 394, then west on 320th St.

Sergeant, Co G 21st Mo. Inft. Vet. Vol. On July 15, 1861, he and his brother H.J. Alvis, enlisted in Company G. Twenty-first Missouri volunteer infantry, serving faithfully through the war of the rebellion and were mustered out April 28, 1866. He joined Cascade lodge, I.O.O.F. at Montrose. He was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and of the A.H.T.A.

He married Sarah A. Turner on 23 Dec 1868.

Sarah A. TURNER was born 3 Mar 1843.  She was from England. Her father was a tailor. His ratchet candelabra is at the Deere House in Grand Detour, Illinois...the candle light could be moved up or down for tailoring convenience.

She died 15 Nov 1920 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Vincennes, Des Moines Township, Section 19, Lee County, Iowa.

Children were: known as "Billy and Charlie"Little Billy 1939

child i.  William E. ALVIS  was born Dec, 1872 in Iowa. He lived on the north side of Ambrosia Lane, west of Sugar Creek, near Argyle, Iowa. My only remembrance of visiting the farms as a small boy was to sit upon the iron seat of an old rusty tractor that was parked by the shed near the Lane and pretend to be driving through the pastures. Now Arbrosia Lane has been blacktopped, the bridge removed and even the course of Sugar Creek altered by the Corps of Engineers.  Billy died on 15 Mar 1956. Services were held at the Argyle Presbyterian Church, Argyle, Iowa. He was buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Vincennes, Des Moines Township, Section 19, Lee County, Iowa.
