Edwin Markham, famed author of "The Man With the Hoe," and other poems, has been declared incompetent by a jury at New York. The action was brought by his sister-in-law, Mary Murphy, the jury finding him unable to manage himself and his property, "by reason of old age, loss of memory and understanding."His Many friends here will be sorry to hear this. He appeared here at a local church, and was also honored by a community dinner. His recitation of his own masterpiece, "The Man With the Hoe," and also other of his works wouldn't have indicated that he suffered from any loss of memory. He is now 84, but he visited Keokuk just two years ago.
